Follow your passions and you won’t work a day in your life (sort of)

When I started out as an accountant learning the ropes and getting to understand the basics of taxation and business, I was already thinking to myself, ‘is this all there is?’. I was ambitious and wanted to work in more interesting areas and utilise my energy and skills to help people on a wider scale.

“Call it what you like, I call it business.”

Some call it entrepreneurship (I personally don’t like the word) but I found that by problem-solving, hard work, and being innovative in areas I was personally interested in, leading me to start investing in a multitude of different businesses. Call it what you like, I call it business.

What I found interesting is that the more I like the industry, say hospitality and sport for instance, the more I wanted to work and the more opportunities came to me. Having rewarding business relationships made my job not feel like work. Who says you can’t mix business and a good time!

Funny as it sounds, the better time I had, the more successful I was. It’s infectious. People want to get you involved in their businesses, people want to work for you, and customers want to buy your products.

People often ask me why I got involved in such diverse industries such as sport, hospitality, manufacturing, property and financial services. It wasn’t planned, but if I like the idea or the people, I want to help them build a better business. So I would get involved and end up owning some or all of the business.

On a personal note, I’m forever grateful that I get the opportunity to assist small organisations, like Melbourne Swimming Club, achieve their goals. It gives me a huge sense of satisfaction, as they add a lot of value to the local community and have provided a place for my own family to become members and get involved.

These things are what makes me wonder how I got so lucky to have a great team and variety of businesses which makes everyday different and interesting. It doesn’t seem like work, even though we all work hard.

It’s safe to say that I’m glad I made the move from accountant to business owner all those years ago. It’s tough at times but with the right attitude and passion, it’s the only way to go!

Regards
