Entrepreneurship is just doing what you're interested in
Having started a few businesses and having some level of success means people want to know how you did it. Some may want you to help them in their businesses, some ask for investment, and others want to know the secret sauce of your financial success. So I thought I would share a bit about my business life to see if it can help others out there with the same ambitions.
Growing up in the western suburbs of Melbourne, I was lucky enough that my parents could afford to send me to a pretty good school, which set me up to get into Accountancy at RMIT University. I thought this would be a good solid career that my parents would approve of.
Little did I know back then where it would lead me. The truth is that we can't really plan or control the future and we just have to ride the horse with enthusiasm and do the best we can.
After finishing University and working at a few places for experience, I set up my own practice as I always enjoyed being my own boss. Brandi & Co is still my business where we work with clients to do their accounting and financial work but it is also where we come across opportunities for investment.
Being exposed to many businesses and opportunities, we started to invest in a few different areas such as hospitality, sports, property and manufacturing. These were areas I was interested in and had a passion for the work required to make them successful. I could see the opportunities to make these organisations better and with great leaders and a great team in each sector, I would say we have done pretty well!.
One of the most important parts of my success has been selecting the right team. Having quality people in each of the sectors was paramount to the organisations doing well. From there, we then added some core strong financial principles to ensure they were run well.
So to give some advice to those entrepreneurs out there… Follow your interests, seek opportunities that feel right at the time, understand that not all of them will work out and that there will be setbacks, and most importantly, surround yourself with good people.
It will not guarantee success, as there are always external factors you can't control, but these are the core learnings I’ve stuck to and think they will give you the best chance of success.
Regards
